Official Launch Student Council

On Friday 25 February, the Student Council will officially be the advisory organ of the municipality of Tilburg, in order to realize a better representation of students in the city of Tilburg.

For the preparation of the Note Tilburg Student City, student organizations were asked to provide input concerning the improvement of the student climate and the role of the municipality. On initiative of the municipality, in 2009 an excursion was organized to Leuven, thé student city of Belgium. Student organizations, the university and the municipality were represented that day. One looked at what makes Leuven such a unique place for students. The conclusion was the attitude of the municipality and the university towards students. They are seen as valuable discussion partner concerning the policy of the city. A condition for the students was that they would put a group forward, to bring out a one clear opinion. Besides that, it has to be visible in the city that there is plenty organized for and by students. From that, four initiatives have been formed, which as of 2010 will be worked out in collaboration with institutions, student organizations and the municipality. It concerns the following initiatives:

  • A studentcentre in the town centre of Tilburg, with amongst others study- and catering facilities. This initiative has already been picked up by Tilburg University, in the form of ‘het Duvelhok’;
  • The development of a more interactive introduction, the TIK-week, and a better fit of it in the total package of welcome activities that will position Tilburg better. Tilburg University has already taken the lead in this;
  • A better representation of students in the city, by means of a Student Council. An intention statement for this was already signed in November 2009;
  • A better positioning of the city, by means of a large-scale and versatile student sports event. This is one of the topics that will be picked up by the Student Council.

The Note Tilburg Student City was adopted by the municipality in 2010, and connected to that the appointment of an alderman Studentaffairs, Ms Moorman. In September 2010, several student organizations were invited for a day at the municipality if Tilburg, with Ms Moorman. During this day the vision of and the Note of Tilburg Student City were discussed, even as concrete ways to achieve collaboration and common goals. After this day, TiGeAk, SAM and SOTS had taken the initiative to form the Student Council. In the forming period also students of Fontys and Avans joined the Student Council, so that we are able to represent even a bigger group of students in Tilburg.

Friday the 25th of Januari, the statutes will officially by signed, contemporaneously the first flag will be hoisted at the society of Olof to fortify the initiative Tilburg Student City.

The main four themes the Student Council will engage in, are:

1. Accomodation;

2. Provision of services;

3. Activation of the student life;

4. Development of Tilburg as a studentcity.

More concrete, in the beginning the Student Council will engage in student accommodations, opening times of shops and bars; facilities of the city centre, public transport and the organization of a large-scale sports event.
